Morning Fun

There is a hole set of machines at King taksin Park and all of us were exercising around. Running, stretching and some work out for a perfect day start.

El parque de King Taksin en Chanthaburi se está convirtiendo en nuestro centro de operaciones. Entrenamiento mañanero: footing, estiramientos, Chi Kun y ejercicios en estas máquinas tan divertidas.

Durian Dinner

 

 

 

 

Fuity people meeting at the park last evening. On the menu: durian, mangosteen, rambutan, greens and cane juice. We were all looking forward to the durian speedy eating competition but it is apparently held at another place. Will be checking tomorrow again.

El rambután

Rambutan is probably the fruit that is most used for the carriage decoration. The day before the festival started, we saw people carefully preparing these. They are fixed with metal rings onto a carpet.

Peluda por fuera y como una uva por dentro. El rambután es la fruta estrella para la decoración de las carrozas y también para nuestros desayunos.

Festival de Frutas!

El durian (foto tras la cantante), es una fruta de sabor y forma muy especial. Tiene una piel muy gruesa con pinchos tras la que se esconden "gajos" de pulpa que saben como a natilla de frutas. Este festival ha atraído a muchos amantes del durianismo, tanto tailandeses como extranjeros.

"Amazing Thailand World Durian Festival".... amazing, isnt´it? This festival is gathering quite a few "durianism" followers.

Chanthaburi sunrise

Amanecer desde mi cuarto, en el 6 piso del Hotel Gems Club. Tengo un balcón y unos ventanales con las mejores vistas de la ciudad, posiblemente. Chanthaburi significa "la ciudad de las piedras preciosas" y la mayoría de los visitantes vienen aqui para algún negocio relacionado con esto. Nosotros, estamos por otra razón: las frutas. Mañana empieza un festival que espero sea bastante pintoresco.

Superb views from my room, on the 6th floor of Gem´s club hotel. Chanthaburi means the city of gems and is apparently a major point for buying these. But I am here to feast on fruits. The world durian festival is starting tomorrow!

La catarata municipal

Dimos un buen paseo por senderos dentro del Parque Nacional (cuyo nombre no recuerdo, sorry), sin cruzarnos con nadie. Pero al llegar a la catarata nos encontramos este panorama estremecedor: una cuerda delimita el espacio donde te puedes bañar; agazapado en la roca, arriba a la derecha hay incluso un socorrista con un silbato y en cuanto alguien se pasa de la raya, pega un par de silbidos para devolverlo al redil.

Unos peces enormes y negruzcos han proliferado de manera alarmante y están por todas partes.

A la entrada del parque, se venden estas vainas que la gente compra para alimentar a los peces ¿Parque Nacional? vaya vaya...

This is the most picturesque waterfall I had ever been to. First there were tons of people, mostly thai families. Second, there were even more tons of these fish, that people feed with some kind of beans that can be bought at the entrance. Third, the bathing area was restricted to half of the pool. There was even a lifeguard with a whistle controlling that nobody would go beyond the rope....Definitely looked like the town swimming pool rather than a forest waterfall.

Had mangosteen feast for breakfast and lunch today. Bought several kilograms at some local stalls at the entrance of the National Park we went to visit in Chanthaburi.

Primer día completo en Chanthaburi. Hoy alquilamos bicis de montaña y fuimos a un parque nacional cercano. Un buen paseo de unos 25 km. Nuestro carburante han sido frutas. La de hoy, la llamada "Reina de las Frutas" por la que mucha gente pierde la cabeza: el mangostán. Chanthaburi es un lugar de renombre para frutas tropicales y por todas partes hay árboles frutales.

Welcome to Thailand

Recien bajada del avión, me he pegado un viaje en tren de 1h30 en 3era clase. Iba de pie, entre dos vagones con esta mujer (que iba bebiendo whisky) y otros hombres de diferentes edades. Mas o menos todos sabian donde me tenia que bajar, asi que me iban diciendo el tiempo que quedaba. Me ofrecieron whisky y cigarrillos que rechacé amablemente. Después decidi sacar la cámara para animar un poco la cosa.

El hombre de la foto llevaba una anillo dorado con la figura de un dios muy popular en la India: Ganesh (tiene cuerpo de hombre y una trompa de elefante y simboliza la buena suerte). Pues bien, al final el hombre me ha regalado el anillo. Regalo de bienvenida.

Had a welcome present upon arrival to Thailand. Took the train to Ayutthaya and this man gave to me the ganesh ring that he was wearing. It is too big for my little fingers but it can be adjusted. The trip was quite 3rd class folkloric.

My initial plan was to rent a bike and tour around the temples but after 24 hours of intense travelling and some jet lag I was feeling kind of dizzy and unstable and chose a boat trip instead. Just arrived in the right sunset time.

Mi plan inicial era alquilar una bici e irme a ver los templos pedaleando. Pero con casi 24 horas de viaje en la espalda, un calor avasallante y el desfase horario, decidi irme en un viaje organizado en canoa. Simplemente sentarse y dejarse llevar. Lo de la bici lo dejo para mañana. los en ruinas.

I met this australian couple during the tour, who have been sailing for the last 7 years. They usually go back to visit family for a couple of months while their boat waits for them at some port. they wanted to continue towards the Mediterranean but pirates are discouraging them and so they are planning another route. They highly recommended me to visit New Caledonia.

Conoci a esta pareja de Australia durante el paseo en bote. Están jubilados y llevan 7 años navegando en velero por el mundo. Ahora van a estar viajando por Tailandia durante un mes, mientras el bote les espera en Malasia. No tienen casa propia en Australia, pero sí familia, así que suelen volver un par de meses en navidades de visita. Querían seguir su ruta hacia el Mediterráneo pero les frena el tema de los piratas, que parece que está serio.

Sunset at Ayutthaya

Atardecer sobre uno de los 300 templos de Ayutthaya, antigua capital de Tailandia y declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la Unesco.

Por cierto, no son guardas republicanos, son estatuas.

Just landed in Bangkok today and I came straight north to Ayutthaya. Prefer to leave the big capital for the end of my trip.

La reina de los germinados

Pipas de girasol germinadas. El procediemiento es algo complicado porque hay que ponerlas en tierra. Pero el resultado vale la pena! La ensalada de hoy va a estar de escándalo.

I love this video of my friend, Afrika. She is a singer and musician and I know her from long time ago. Grown up in the Basque country, in the same town as me; she then moved to Barcelona and now is hitting the stage in Madrid. Keep moving forward Afrika!

Me encanta este video de Afrika. Nos conocemos de toda la vida ya que crecimos en el mismo pueblo (o ciudad mas bien) pero siempre alucino al verla en acción, como una gran estrella. Seguiré poniendo "truquillos" domésticos en el blog, Afriks! Mila esker.

Verdes silvestres-Wild edible greens

Algunas de las plantas silvestres que abundan ahora en el campo y se pueden consumir:

El ombligo de venus. Para ensaladas o batidos. Esta hoja tiene muy buena presentación. Se encuentra de diferentes tamaños. Un buen guacamole servido sobre hojas de estas tiene la apariencia de un plato de restaurante.

Umbilicus pendulinus. Ideal for guacamole or nut pate presentation.

La hoja de la colza tiene un sabor como a mostaza. Unas cuantas hojas en la ensalada le darán un toque picante. Único problema: seguramente serán variedades transgénicas escapadas de algún campo de cultivo.

Colza leaves taste like mustard. This will add an extra-strong flavour to your salad. I am afraid the ones we find in the hedgerows are not organic though, probably some transgenic variety that has escaped from crop fields...

La borraja. Esta hoja peluda no tiene pinta muy agradable a primera vista. Sin embargo, se puede usar para batidos verdes. Como con la ortiga, una vez batida no se nota ninguna aspereza. Muy rica con plátano, por ejemplo. También se puede preparar como las acelgas, al vapor o cocida.

Borage leaves. Have been making really good smoothies of these with banana. Can also be inmersed for a few seconds in boiling water to eat as a veggie.

Acedera. También se pueden añadir unas cuantas hojas a la ensalada, que le dan el mismo sabor que si añadiéramos limón.

Don´t know the english name for this (Rumex sp.) but they are extremely common in this area. The leaves taste acid, like lemon. Great for salads.
