la cajetilla de cerillas

A funny scene: these babas were desperately trying to grab a match box that had fallen behind the wall. There was great expectancy.

The Baba Series

Yesterday I had a funny evening. A lot of these orange dressed "babas" started congregating around Ram Jhula. I was dying to take pictures of them but did not really know how to handle the situation. I finally decided to ask to some of them and they nodded affirmatively so I shooted a few pics and them showed the result to them. They seemed to appreciate it and so, other babas started coming so as to be photographed. Soon, I was completely surrounded by orange men waiting for their turn.... I would show the resulting photo each time with the corresponding ovation and applause of the others... Finally, the one that acted as "moderator" said that it was enough and that they all had to go for food... We thanked each other with deep gestures and followed our way...

Ganga aarti

Cantos, oraciones y ofrendas a tutiplén.

Went to the Ganga aarti yesterday. I did not stay until the end but they told me that The Guru gives a lecture at the end of the ceremony and that it is possible to ask him questions.

Así se hizo... (the making of)

Yesterday they were shooting some south indian film scene near Ram Jhula. I had seen some of these fake saddhus hanging around that did not look authentic and then I understood...

Louise Ellis has been a practicioner and teacher of yoga for almost 40 years. She learned at the KPJAYI in Mysore with Pattabi Joys and teaches regularly in Rishikesh. This is the true reason why I have come all the way to here (also to enjoy travelling, obviously). Her lessons are awesome, filled with good energy and a lot of useful information: I have switched to the “sponge mode” and am infinitely grateful for being able to be here right now. I will hopefully post an interview with her soon. You can find more information at her website:

Urban primates (monos urbanitas)

Found this woman selling cactus fruit and was really curious about it. I bought some to her, not really to eat because they are almost pure seeds, but to be able to take some pictures. She told me they bring them from a state in the north Himachal Pradesh.

Vendedores ambulantes-Street stalls

I love the way these guys take care of their street stalls

Had never seen this before. This guy came to me with the little cotton stick pointing at me, ready to "operate". I told him very seriously that I am the only one to treat my ears. Then he accepted to be taken in a picture (note the cotton coming out of his hat).

On the Ganga banks

Had a walk along the river and made business with two girls: one of them sold to me a small tray with flowers to offer to the river (then I bitterly regretted doing this, at least I should have just thrown the flowers and not the tray... what a way to pollute the river...) and the other one sold to me one of her drawings (I liked this, instead of just asking for money, she does something creative).

Foggy Delhi

I have just arrived to Delhi that was covered by a dense fog that is apparently characteristic of this time of the year. I am in the Main Bazaar area, near the train station. Won´t spend any night here; in a few hours I am taking the train to Haridwar. I had a literally smoothie arrival: everything went like on weels: stamping passport, recovering my luggage, changing money, getting a taxi to the center... and even finding a clean hotel near the train station. These huge mudra sculptures gave me the welcome at the airport. Funny... learning more about mudras is one of the objectives of this trip....

Persimmons at sunrise. It is not one of my top fruits, but I get them as a free, abundant and local resource... which gives them extra points.
