Buenos recuerdos

Good memories: the day before leaving Goa I played at sunset with these kids. At first, I was just taking pictures but soon I was rolling among the waves with them. Sometimes it is useful to have a waterproof camera.

Spice plantation in Savoi

I went to visit a spice plantation yesterday in Savoi, near Ponda. They only use organic compost and cow shit as fertilizer. A guy took me on a tour and showed me all this stuff.

Vainas de vainilla. Green Vanilla pods.
Turmeric plant. The roots, similar to ginger, are made into powder.

Nutmeg. The filaments are also used for cooking (don' t remember the name).
Otra vez el jackfruit. Me ensenyo unas cuantas frutas mas. Nada que no conociera.
Jackfruit, again. I have seen loads from the road. Really like the sight of these huge trees.

Este es el cardamomo. Las semillas salen dentro de pequenyas vainas.
The plant that gives cardamom seeds.
Pimienta. Black pepper.
The cinnamon tree. The leaves taste exactly like the bark and are used to give taste to indian dishes.
Betel nut palm leave that was traditionally used to make bags & lots of other stuff.

Arambol

I went to visit the north coast of Goa yesterday. There were plenty of indian families having a great time on the beach.

Chiku-sapodilla

I also like this fruit. It is like sapodilla in Central America. At first sight it is not really appealing, looks like a potato. But it is really tasty. It also has some really cool seeds inside that I bet are used for artisanal stuff. In local language it is called "chiku" or also known as "indian kiwi".

I like Panasa (Jaka)

The jackfruit (panasa, in local language) is the largest treeborne fruit in the world. There is a tree at the Kala Academy, where the symposium is held, but they are still not very big. In the market though, you can find huge ones and they sell them for around 300 rupees the piece. So far, I have only been buying peeled segments, which they sell between 20 and 40 rupees the bag. Really like the taste....

The market is the first place that I went to chack as soon as I arrived to Panjim. This is the one I like most so far: big but not crowded and with a high variety of products. To my relief, lots of "tender coconuts" and even outside in the street. I will continue reporting about all these products.... but so far, still fasting on coconut water.... till hunger comes...

30-03-2010: Presentación de la tesis

with my supervisor.

Lots of things to celebrate this last days. I just accomplished my PhD about the nesting of the leatherback turtle in Gabon, Central Africa and I also just turned 32 (my birthday on the 1st of april). I have been in the Canary Islands to do the official presentation and now back home.

Pine Nuts

No wonder pine nuts are sold so expensive... hardly a handful has come out of this pine cone... and you need patience to break every nut... Not enough for a pesto sauce... will throw them in my salad!
