Blessed by the ocean (Larga vida al océano)

Yesterday I enjoyed watching several humpback whales jumping out of the sea ("breaching") from the coast near Lahaina.

Today I was swimming in tandem with green turtles for almost an hour. I went to Hookipa and brought my snorkelling gear. oday the water was really clear. The first one, a male, appeared and was swimming next to me for a while. Then I saw another one still at the bottom in a clear "cleaning station" position (several fishes were cleaning her). Finally, I spent a really long time swimming with a female that was grazing algae. We were floating next to each other and rocked simultaneously by the waves and current. Sometimes the current would bring us so close that we would touch each other... Such a gift, I feel so blessed...

To top it all, outside on the sand were also some sunbathing sleeping males. I definitely find Hookipa as an amazing spot and example for harmonious coexistence of humans and animals.




Ayer estuve deleitándome largo rato con ballenas jorobadas brincando en la lejanía. Es época de cría ahora en Hawaii. Estas vienen desde Alaska y pasan aquí los meses de invierno.

Hoy cogi las gafas de bucear y las aletas y estuve nadando mano a mano (o más bien brazo con aleta) con gigantescas tortugas verdes. La primera, un macho, se acercó a mí y estuvo nadando a la par mía mientras yo me reponía de la impresión sacando el agua del tubo y alucinaba en colores (como los peces de alrededor). La segunda que vi estaba en el fondo en posición de "estación de limpieza". Este comportamiento es muy típico de varios seres oceánicos (también tiburones, por ejemplo): se ponen en una posición que los peces reconocen como luz verde para ponerse a limpiarles el cuerpo. Y para rematar estuve un buen rato con una hembra que andaba "pastando" algas. Las dos nos mecíamos a la vez con las olas y a veces la corriente nos traía tan cerca que era imposible no tocarnos... Otro sueño hecho realidad... Mamma Mia!!!

Para rematar, al salir había un par de machos durmientes asoleándose en la arena. Definitivamente, Hookipa parece ser un ejemplo modelo de convivencia entre humanos y animales.


Como dato anecdótico: Me comí un gigantesco pomelo ultradulce y jugoso contemplando el espectáculo al atardecer.
