Dia -1: Siento un poco de agujetas por todo el cuerpo pero me digo que igual son debidas a las sesiones de yoga o las mega-caminatas por la playa.

Dia 0: Subidón de fiebre en unas pocas horas. Dolores articulares por todo el cuerpo.

Dia 1: Fiebre y dolor de cabeza terrible. Empiezo a tomar el tratamiento. Son 4 pastillas en cada toma. Despues de tomarlas se nota mucho el efecto: baja un poco la fiebre y el dolor de cabeza te da un receso. Aun así, consigo comer. Noche febril y con delirios sobre aguacates.

Dia 2: La fiebre no baja y el dolor de cabeza es espantoso; son como retorcijones punzantes en tu cerebro. No se si es por la enfermedad o por las pastillas pero el sabor de boca es asqueroso. El médico (super atento, por cierto) me llama y me dice que todo esto es normal: el tratamiento ha empezado a matar parasitos que mi cuerpo estará tratando de evacuar. Noche bastante horrible también porque la fiebre no baja.

Dia 3: La fiebre ha desaparacido pero es el día de la debilidad y los mareos. Casi no me puedo poner de pie porque todo me da vueltas. Aun así, el dolor de cabeza ha desaparecido tambien! Conforme va pasando el día se va pasando el mareo y al atardecer ya estaba dándome un paseito por el pueblo.

El tratamiento termina al de 3 días. Luego se supone que te quedas débil y cansado y debes recuperar fuerzas. En mi caso, el único sintoma que persiste son los mareos, todavía me dan de vez en cuando. Hay relatos espeluznantes de episodios de malaria; en mi caso creo que he tenido mucha suerte porque lo he pillado justo al principio y no ha dado tiempo a que el maldito parasito se reproduzca y me invada sin piedad. No he experimentado sintomas como el frio polar o las tiritonas, tampoco me han tenido que ingresar en el hospital para transfusiones. Mejor que mejor!

This picture was taken by Jose on the 1st of january, when I got positive for the malaria test. I was very lucky because I reacted very quickly and started taking the treatment before the parasite had time to take over my blood and organs. I took COARTEM for 3 days.

The only symtoms I had prior to day 1 was a certain pain in my body which I thought might be due to the yoga sessions of the previous days. A sudden rise in temperature was the worrying sign that made me go to the clinic straight ahead. On the first two days I had permanent temperature and a terrible headache. I do not know if it was due to the ilness or to the pills I was taking but the taste in the mouth was really bad. On the third day these symptoms had disappeared and all I had was a general feeling of dizziness and weakness. I could almost not wake up from my bed. This was probably due to the fight that my body had had against the parasite. However by the end of the day I was already having a walk in town in search of avocados. Now I need to get strong again and have a lot of rest. This event was definitely not in the program and now I have to reorganize myself again.
