Underwater modelling

A few weeks ago I spent the day with Erena Shimoda, www.erenashimoda.com underwater portrait photographer. After meeting for the first time in San Francisco (see www.maiteikaran.blogspot.com/2011/11/san-francisco.html), we had planned to see each other again in Maui for a yoga shooting session. I had quite an idyllic idea of the thing and was imagining myself doing all sorts of poses with an ocean set. Alas, being an underwater yogini turned out to be more complicated than I thought!

Although we went to the west coast, were water is usually calm and clear, environmental conditions were not the ideal that day: there were waves and wind (we shooted near the shore) and the water was kind of turbulent. It was challenging for both of us but we decided to give it a try. Some of the hindrances on my side: first, instead of breathing, you need to take all the air out of your lungs and then hold it so as to fully sink (so yes, it´s like doing kumbaka during asana); second, water tends to flip you in all directions except verticality (more when waves) and third you wanna look peaceful and relaxed while all this is happening. Not an easy task at all...

All in all, it was a good experience AND we had a lot of fun. Here are some of the pics Erena sent to me:


Maite modelo submarina por un día.

Conocí a Erena Shimoda en San Francisco (www.maiteikaran.blogspot.com/2011/11/san-francisco.html) y cuando me dijo que venía a Maui para unas sesiones de fotografía submarina, quedamos para vernos y hacer unas posturas de yoga. Tras visitar su página web www.erenashimoda.com, y ver su obra, tenía una idea bastante idílica de la cosa, imaginándome todo tipo de asanas con fondo oceánico pero resultó ser más complicado de lo que pensaba. Primero: en vez de respirar durante la postura (como se hace normalmente), tienes que contener el aire y expulsarlo de los pulmones para poder hundirte. Segundo que la corriente te balancea en todas direcciones salvo la vertical. Y tercero, en medio de todo esto, trata de mantener una expresión tranquila y relajada para la foto!

Unido a esto, me lo pusieron todavía más difícil: había viento y oleaje (lo hicimos en la orilla) y el agua estaba bastante turbia. A pesar de que fuimos a la costa oeste, que siempre suele tener aguas tranquilas y cristalinas, nos tocó un día chungo.

Erena & her baby. An underwater camera is no joke... it needs to be programmed carefully and is quite heavy stuff. Although it gets lighter once in the water, it is still challenging to manipulate. We had so much fun... thanks Erena for the good job!

Erena y su "hija". Una cámara para fotografía submarina es algo bastante aparatoso. Hay que programarla con antelación y es super pesada. Aunque una vez en el agua ya no pesa tanto, es bastante complicado manejarla, más aún con oleaje como el día que nos tocó.
